Breast diagnostics

Breast diagnostics is the branch of radiology dedicated to screening, early diagnosis, and prevention of breast diseases.

It deals with:

  • Study of breast functions
  • Study, prevention, and diagnosis of benign breast diseases (cysts, fibroadenomas, ...)
  • Study, prevention, and diagnosis of malignant breast diseases (breast cancer, ...)
  • Genetic Counseling
SYMPTOMS
  • Lumps or thickening in the breast area
  • Changes in the shape or size of the breast (even if no lump is palpable)
  • Redness in the breast area
  • Nipple discharge (especially if bloody)
  • Nipple retraction or skin changes or abnormalities
  • Pain in the breast area
  • Enlargement of axillary lymph nodes (axillary adenopathy)

Includes a series of clinical and instrumental examinations consisting of:

  • Breast Examination
  • Diagnostic Tests:
    - Mammography
    - Tomosynthesis
    - Breast ultrasound
    - Breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
    - Galactography
  • Interventional Diagnostics:
    - Fine needle aspiration
    - Ultrasound-guided interventional procedures
    - Stereotactic biopsy (interventional procedure under stereotactic guidance for cytological and histological characterization of lesions)
