Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine that studies, diagnoses, and treats disorders and diseases of the digestive system organs, such as the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and biliary tract.

It also includes the possibility of performing endoscopic examinations (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) for both diagnostic and operative purposes, under light or deep sedation (with anesthesiological assistance).

The examinations are generally performed on an outpatient basis, but can be conducted as inpatient procedures when required.

SYMPTOMS

It is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist if you experience symptoms such as:

Persistent abdominal pain and cramps
Stomach pain, bloating, and burning
Difficulty digesting and heartburn
Changes in bowel habits, such as chronic diarrhea or constipation
Persistent nausea and vomiting

Abnormalities detected in previous diagnostic tests
Presence of blood in the stool
