Diabetology
Diabetology is the branch of medicine that deals with the study, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment/management of diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) caused by the lack or reduced production of insulin or by an abnormality in insulin action itself.
Diabetes can be:

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (insulin-dependent diabetes):
an autoimmune disease where the immune system destroys insulin-producing pancreatic cells, preventing insulin production. -
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (non-insulin-dependent diabetes):
a pathological condition (influenced by genetics, incorrect diet, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, ...) that results in insufficient insulin production or ineffective use of insulin by the body (insulin resistance).
SYMPTOMS
The most common symptoms are:
- Frequent urination (polyuria)
- Excessive thirst (polydipsia)
- Excessive hunger
- Unexpected weight loss (unexpected weight reduction)
- Feeling tired and fatigued
- Blurred vision
- Slow wound healing
DIAGNOSIS
The diagnosis is based on laboratory tests that measure blood glucose levels:
- Fasting blood glucose: values ≥ 126 mg/dL, collected on two different occasions, may indicate diabetes.
- Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c): values ≥ 6.5% can confirm the diagnosis of diabetes.
TREATMENT
- Diabetes prevention: dietary and physical activity instructions to prevent the development of diabetic disease or prediabetic states.
- Diabetes diagnosis: diagnosis of diabetic disease or prediabetic states through specialist visits and laboratory tests (fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin.
- Diabetes treatment: establishment of pharmacological therapies and lifestyle adjustments. Dietary and physical activity instructions to prevent the worsening of diabetic disease or prediabetic states.
- Diabetes management: monitoring of diabetic disease, with evaluation of patient response to treatment and degree of glycemic control.
